Tunisian Houndstooth

Updated: Sep 24, 2021

When I first learnt Tunisian crochet many, many moons ago (probably somewhere in the 1970s), all I knew how to do was the basic Tunisian simple stitch or TSS and I soon lost interest in Tunisian crochet. Little did I know that there was a whole new world out there waiting to be discovered and, fortunately, with the advent of the internet and YouTube, that world has opened up to all who take the time to delve into all the resources that are available. And, I looooove delving!

So, in search of new stitches and techniques, I came across a YT video on how to do the houndstooth stitch. I have always just loved the classic elegance of the black and white houndstooth design. To my delight, I also discovered a free pdf download by Hayley Joanne Robinson for a Reversible Tunisian Houndstooth Scarf (on Ravelry).

I am very pleased with the result. It is an easy pattern to do, just using 2 basic stitches, TSS (Tunisian simple stitch) and TPS (Tunisian purl stitch). My scarf that I am still busy with, is made using Elle Charity DK and a 6mm Tunisian hook.

The front and the back are reverse images and this lends great versatility to the design.

Since creating this scarf I have found another way of creating the houndstooth pattern using this YT tutorial by Moon Eldridge and decided to try it using non-traditional houndstooth colours. I used some Kartopu Snowball #3/ DK weight yarn and a 5mm Tunisian hook for this WIP. Here is a photo of what this way of doing the houndstooth design looks like. I somehow prefer this design even though it is not reversible like the previous one.
